PRIMER and delaO design studio want to challenge you!

Through speculative and critical design methodologies we want to have a better understanding about the role of plastics (or the lack of it) and explore parallel realities by imagining new alternatives in our daily life. Help us visualize new possibilities for the use of plastic! Use our Prediction Generator to design a fictional artifact, which can take the form of a product, poster, garment, or some other design manifestation. Use our scenarios as inspiration and submit a concept of how you would imagine this diegetic prototype.

We want to invite design students and recent graduates to be part of this challenge, imagining the aspect of everyday life in a Post-Covid19 world. Using one of the two scenarios we generated, we invite you to use Speculative Design tactics as a driver of change.

This challenge applies terms and conditions.

Submission deadline: 19/06/2020, 11:59 CT

The New Normal Superhero by Mexind Collective.

The government responded with a new subject in the educational program for kids of ages 5 to 12, in which they would mandatorily learn the principles of recycling and plastic producing. Although it brought hope for a better future, the problem was worse than we expected and what started as a new subject became the whole program and children became recycling slaves. Now they knew, that this is THE NEW NORMAL.

Plasticful Foods by Waste2Worth

The project has taken facts from the present and projected them into a possible future, inviting audiences to imagine that eating plastic may be a viable waste management practice within the coming decade. As we are already consuming large amounts of microplastic incidentally, and waste management procedures are not changing to contain the problem, this may be our only option.

Plastic Tequio by Hebra Colectivo

The sphere is protective gear for your head, it is made up of the semi-permeable membrane which only allows the oxygen and other essential gases to go in and carbon dioxide to go out. This process is found in a lot of plants membranes like the inner thin layer found on Onion. The Sphere also does not allow the viruses such as coronavirus to enter the sphere since it requires a carrier like saliva or mucus. Hence anyone can continue the daily routines with the help of this object. One does not have to follow social distancing as long as everyone is wearing this sphere.

After Covid-19, PPE began to saturate and merge into our environment, it found it’s way into our food. Without being able to process microplastics, humans developed chronic diseases from the increased levels of plastics in their systems. Consequently, this led to the design of an object that would help monitor the ingestion of microplastics in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle. As of 2020, humans ingest the equivalent of a credit card of microplastics on a weekly basis, without knowing what the health consequences are. The wrongful disposal of PPE is likely to increase this to alarming numbers and our health will pay the cost. This product calls health institutions to further investigate their effect on our health and how we may control them.

S.U.W. by Daniel Avila

Disposable plastic items are one of the biggest polluters of the world. However, in a scenario where this doesn’t matter, new items such as clothing will become disposable. Taking advantage of the mass production and the diverse properties of plastic, this clothing and lifestyle will be able appealing to everyone. Single use, waterproof, odor free clothing will be the norm. Living during the quarantine it has become obvious that clothing has a really specific role in lives. Having to worry about functionality and hygiene has become a priority. As facemasks and gloves, single use clothing will allow us to interact with the world in safer way as COVID19 has taught us.
